a5c7b9f00b When Doug's father, an Air Force Pilot, is shot down by MiGs belonging to a radical Middle Eastern state, no one seems able to get him out. Doug finds Chappy, an Air Force Colonel who is intrigued by the idea of sending in two fighters piloted by himself and Doug to rescue Doug's father after bombing the MiG base. Their only problems: Borrowing two fighters, getting them from California to the Mediteranean without anyone noticing, and Doug's inability to hit anything unless he has music playing. Then come the minor problems of the state's air defenses. A young pilot plans a rescue mission when his father, an Air Force Colonel, is shot down over enemy territory and captured. This movie is the proverbial 80s flick that shows the viewer thatlonghe or she tries at something, they can be better than the pros. The main character, Doug, showed off his skills in flying a Cessna aircraft, which somehow equated to being fully capable of flying a jet aircraft and being able to kill people. We all would like to have a few million dollars to play with… maybe make a good investment, donate, buy a few things, but the directors of this movie decided to make Iron Eagle… not once… not twice… not even three times; yes, four times. The thing to look most forward to are the multitude 'hollywood endings' in this movie. Just when you think the movie is going to end after a cheesy end sequence, there's another cheesy end sequence. Then another. Definitely a movie one must watch to believe… and maybe own just to remind oneself of how awesome the 80s must have been. U.S. Air Force pilot Col. Ted Masters is shot down by enemy MiGs from the Arab state of Bilya over the Mediterranean. He is captured and sentenced to hang. Meanwhile, his restless son Doug Masters (Jason Gedrick) is rejected by the Air Force Academy. With the government unwilling to mount a rescue, Doug plans his own rescue mission with his young friends from the Eagles Flying Club. He convinces Vietnam vet Col. Charles 'Chappy' Sinclair (Louis Gossett Jr.) to train him and join him on the mission.

I probably saw this after 'Top Gun'. Despite coming out a few months earlier, I doubt that many people saw this in the theaters. It was always a step down but seeing it now, the silly unrealistic story cannot be ignored. The action is inferior to 'Top Gun' but it's still functional. There are nice planes flying around. The miniature models being used are obvious. The explosions are static. This was good fun back in the day but it is not more than 80's cheese today. It is regrettable that the highest of production values have been invested in this, the cheapest of stories.
